"Project Humanoid" was a mod being developed by Aiteron (recently hired by The Indie Stone ) and currently only available via Aiteron's Discord. There are no NPC's anymore in vanilla, HOWEVER, there is a mod you can get that adds NPCs to the game. Multiplayer is available but it's outdated in an old build. THe latest build should recieve MP by the end of the year I've heard. Superb survivors adds npcs. Not perfect but it'll definitely scratch that itch.

Imo it's worth at least 1-2 hrs to give it a shot, just to try the new things (warning: You'll need to relearn how to play, especially how to fight).
